Comprehensive History of The Start Of Ugg
September 28th, 2011Ugg boots are sheepskin boots with fleece on the inside and a tan on the outside.
The origins of Ugg boots began down under, but whether Australia or New Zealand started the trend first is still up for debate. What we do know is that sheepskin boots whereabouts were in rural Australia in 1920. We also know manufactured sheepskin boots were being made in 1933 and by the 1950′s another company started making them. The origins of the name “Ugg” came in 1970, around the same time these boots became popular in Australia. The name “Ugg” were names given to these sheepskin boots, even though there are disputes saying that the name was stolen from an earlier time, mainly World War I when they called their boots “fug boots.”
The trademark “UGG” is currently property of Deckers, Inc. Steadman registered the name “ugh boots” in Australia in 1971. Brian Smith brought it to the US in 1979, made a company called Ugg Holdings, Inc., and bought the rights from Steadman. Smith registed the name “Original UGG Boot UGG Australia” in the US in 1985, and then sold his company to Deckers in 1995. It really hit big in the 2000′s.
